What is a sand wedge loft?

Loft refers to the angle at which the face of a golf club hits a ball. It is measured in degrees starting from the vertical plane relative to the face. Most sand wedge lofts are between 54 and 58 degrees.
A loft angle becomes more horizontal as it moves toward 90 degrees. Lob wedges have a loft of between 60 and 64 degrees, which is generally the largest loft in a club set. Sand wedges are usually slightly less lofty than lob wedges. Sand bunkers often have high, steep banks and require wedges that pop the ball up over their edges. Sand wedges have wide soles for cutting through sand and providing extra bounce to balls. Sand wedges may also be used outside of bunkers for shots that require short pop-ups.
