What is lithic sandstone?

Lithic sandstone is fine, grained sandstone that contains greater than 5 percent of lithic fragments. Lithic sandstones have a gray or speckled color associated with sedimentary lithic fragments. Lithic sandstones are typically formed in regions with significant tectonic activity.
The formation of lithic sandstone begins with the creation of basins by tectonic forces. Next, rocks and soil from the area surrounding the basin are typically shed through erosion and transported into the basin. After the debris is deposited, it settles into the basin where it may form sandstone. Quartz makes up to two thirds of the minerals in lithic sandstone.
