The scientific name for a maple tree is an Acer, and a leaf from this tree is called an Acer leaf. With about 128 different species of maples, the leaves vary in arrangement, compounds and leaflets. Common maple trees and leaves include the Acer griseum, Acer mandshuricum and Acer triflorum.
Maple leaves have what is known as opposite leaf arrangement. Most species are palmate veined and lobed, with three to nine veins or sometimes up to 13. Each vein leads to a lobe, and one of the veins is apical, or central. A few maples leaves, such as Acer laevigatum and Acer carpinifolium have pinnately veined simple leaves.
