A scull is a narrow, light racing boat for one, two or four people, with each passenger propelling the boat with a pair of oars. Eight person sculls are used in junior leagues or exhibitions.
Sculling is a type of competitive rowing where each person controls two oars, one on each side of the scull. The method of propelling the scull in this manner is known as sculling, and the short handled oars are also referred to as sculls. Rowers much match the speed and cadence of each other in order to propel the boat efficiently. Competitive sculling is recorded from as early as the 18th Century and is one of the oldest Olympic sports, with the sport being introduced in 1900.
