Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeno was an explorer for the country of Spain. He was from Portugal and lived during the late 1500s and early 1600s.
Sebastian Cermeno was commissioned by New Spain to locate a secure and safe harbor on the northern coast of California. New Spain needed a new harbor in order to transport goods more quickly and safely.
Cermeno's journey began in March of 1594, and the exploration came to an end in January of 1596. He and his crew traveled on the St. Augustine, which was an 80-foot galleon.
He did not locate a safe harbor, but was successful in mapping the majority of the California coast.
