David Shepard Smith married Virginia Donald in 1987, and they divorced in 1993 with no children. The two met at the University of Mississippi prior to him leaving school two credits short of his journalism degree.

Smith was born in 1964 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He first worked as a reporter at WJHG-TV in Panama City Beach, Florida, and held many jobs reporting the news before joining Fox News at its inception in 1996. Mr. Smith currently serves as the chief news anchor and managing editor for Fox News and anchors Shepard Smith Reporting, a daily news show on the Fox network.
