How often should you check your dryer vent for clogging?

Homeowners are advised to check and clean out dryer vents at least once per year to reduce the risk of fire. Over time, lint and debris from the drying process can build up inside the vent and block air flow, which in turn can cause exhaust buildup.
There are a few signs that owners can watch for that may indicate a blockage in the dryer vent, including extended times required for clothes to dry, excessive heat on clothing and the outside of the dryer and an obvious burning smell during use. Periodic cleaning can help prevent these and other issues.
