What should you do if a dog bites you?

A person bitten by a dog often can treat the bite at home but should seek medical care if the dog is unknown and if the bite is deep, seems infected or continues bleeding, according to WebMD. Report a bite from an unknown dog to animal control.
For at-home dog-bite treatment, WebMD recommends stemming bleeding with a clean towel on the wound and elevating and washing the bite. A sterile bandage helps prevent infections. People who have conditions like diabetes may have an increased chance of infection. Consider whether the dog has his vaccinations, including for rabies, and the cause of the bite.
