A pre-workout meal should be low in fat and fiber, and moderate in carbohydrates and protein, according to WebMD. It should also be accompanied by plenty of fluids, especially water.
Muscles need carbohydrates for energy and protein to repair and heal from a workout, The body also needs water to stay cool and hydrated. Eat a regular meal four hours before exercising and a snack one hour prior to working out. Longer workout sessions need a bigger snack, while shorter sessions need a smaller one, according to Weight Watchers. Drink 16 ounces of water two hours before a workout and then drink to thirst during and after the workout.
