What should you do if you notice that one foot is swelling up?

A swollen foot due to an injury is treated by applying ice or wrapping it with a compression bandage and elevating it, according to WebMD. If the foot is excessively swollen during pregnancy and accompanied by abdominal pain, headaches, nausea, vomiting or changes in vision, call a doctor immediately.
Injuries that cause severe pain and swelling in the foot and do not improve with home treatment need to be tended to by a doctor, explains WebMD. However, swollen feet and ankles are a common occurrence and rarely require treatment, especially if a person has been standing or walking a lot. When swelling is accompanied by other symptoms or does not go away, it becomes a potentially serious medical issue.
