Who should get a prostate exam?

The MD Anderson Cancer Center recommends that men begin discussing prostate screenings with their doctors at age 40, and it does not recommend screenings for men 85 and older. To make an informed decision, men should ask for information about the potential benefits and limitations of screenings.
The American Cancer Society recommends discussions about prostate examination at age 50 for men with typical risk; age 45 for African-American men and men at high risk; and age 40 for men in the highest-risk category. Due to the typically slow growth of prostate cancer, the ACS doesn't recommend screenings for asymptomatic men who have a life expectancy of less than 10 years.
