According to WebMD and Mayo Clinic, see a doctor for a sudden headache when it occurs with other symptoms such as dizziness, numbness, confusion, vision changes and seizures. Headaches accompanied by rashes or fevers higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit also warrant a visit to the doctor.
WebMD says that other situations in which to consult a doctor for a sudden headache include if the headache pain is so intense it wakes you at night or if you have recently experienced head trauma. WebMD adds that if you are 55 or older and are experiencing a new kind of headache, the experience is also worth a doctor's visit.
