Red chokeberry, roughleaf dogwood, fig, forsythia and winterberry holly are deer-resistant shrubs. Factors that influence whether a shrub is deer resistant include the shrub's taste, digestibility and toxicity. Landowners may plant deer-resistant shrubs around the perimeter of their properties or among other plants.
Boxwood is another deer-resistant shrub. This aromatic evergreen is 2 to 3 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity with a rounded, flat top. It is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture zone 4 and requires moist soil.
Northern bayberry is also an aromatic, deer-resistant shrub. It grows to 6 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet long at maturity and features wavy, dark green leaves. It grows in moist, dry and acetic soil.
