Do snakes sleep?

Yes, snakes do sleep, though it may be hard for a novice human to determine when the snake is asleep because they are not able to shut their eyes the way people do. Snakes also do not necessarily sleep at night; rattlesnakes tend to be nocturnal, meaning they are active at night.
Because snakes don't have eyelids, they can't close their eyes to sleep or blink, and they may appear to be staring while they sleep. Some snakes are able to shut their retinas in order to block light, but a casual observer will not be able to see that the snake's retina is shut.
