Do snakes sleep at night?

Many species of snake are nocturnal, so they sleep during the day and remain awake throughout the night. Snakes evade larger predators and hunt prey of their own during this time.
Classified as some of nature's deadliest predators, snakes locate their prey using their sense of smell, their visual acuity and their sensitivity to heat. Even though they have teeth, these carnivores swallow their food whole. Some snakes have venom in their sharpest teeth, called fangs, that paralyzes their prey. Other snakes wrap their bodies around their prey and tighten their coils, suffocating the prey. This method is called constriction.
