How does Snapchat work?

Snapchat is an instant messaging application. Messages are in the form of photos or videos, called "snaps," and users can specify how long the recipient can view them before they are automatically deleted, with a range of 1 to 10 seconds.
Users are able to add captions and drawings to the photos and videos they send. Snapchat has a separate application for users under the age of 13 called Snapkidz. Snapchat Stories was added in October of 2013, which allows users to create links to shared content that stays up for 24 hours and can be shared an unlimited amount of times.
