Wash the hair first with shampoo and conditioner, then pat dry with a towel. With the hair still moist, untangle the hair strands using a wide-toothed comb. Apply some gel or wax to the hair, then run your fingers through the hair upward from the scalp to create spikes. Let the hair dry completely using a hairdryer.
- Prepare your curly hair
When washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, use products that have no creamy contents in order to give the curly hair a lighter feel and straighter strands. Let your hair dry slightly, keeping it moist. Run a wide-toothed comb or hairbrush through your hair to untangle any knots and remove frizz.
- Apply gel or wax to hair
Spread some gel or wax evenly through each section of moist hair. Use a product that is designed for thick and curly hair. Use gel if you're aiming for a wet look. Use wax if you're aiming for a matte appearance. Do not use too much product, as excessive amounts give your hair a rigid look.
- Spike your hair
Before the gel or the wax dries, run your fingers through your locks, starting from the roots upward to create small spikes. Use a wide-toothed comb in the same motion to create more natural-looking spikes. Control the size of the spikes by controlling the thickness of each section of hair that you spike.
- Dry your hair gently
Use a hairdryer on a low setting to dry your spiked hair.
