Hockey Canada’s Douglas Fisher and the National Hockey League Players Association’s Alan Eagleson established the Canada Cup in 1976. Their intent was to capitalize on the worldwide interest generated by the 1972 hockey series between Canada and the Soviet Union.
The Canada Cup was designed to bring together the best national hockey teams from Europe, Canada and the United States to compete in tournaments every three to four years in various North American hockey arenas. Other Canada Cup tournaments were held in 1981, 1984, 1987 and 1991. The tournament was renamed the World Cup of Hockey in September 1996. That year, the U.S. national team defeated Canada in the tournament final.
