When is the fall salmon run at Tippy Dam?

The fall salmon run at Tippy Dam on the Manistee River in Dickson Township, Michigan, begins in late August or early September each year. Anglers can catch Chinook salmon at Tippy Dam as early as late July.
The water above Tippy Dam does not freeze in the winter, so anglers can fish the waters on the Manistee River for northern pike, bass or steelhead year round. Most of the spawning gravel is located in the first mile below the dam. King salmon appear in the river in early September during their spawn run, and spawning peaks in October. Anglers successfully catch salmon using crankbaits and skein fishing, and they can find large king salmon in deep holes or log jams.
