Do you have to pull back the hammer of a .357 magnum to use it?

Most modern pistols designed for the .357 Magnum cartridge do not require the hammer to be pulled back in order to fire. Some replica weapons, based on historic firearms, may involve cocking the hammer, but these weapons were not originally designed to fire the .357.
Modern revolver-style pistols use a double-action model. This means that pulling the trigger forces the hammer back and, upon completion of the pull, swings it forward. This allows the pistol to be fired more rapidly than the older single-action types. The hammer may be manually cocked in a double-action pistol, but it is not required.
