What is Spumoni ice cream?

Spumoni ice cream is a traditional Italian dessert and is made up of layers of ice cream. The original recipe involves an ice cream filled with either nuts or fruit that is placed around a sponge cake.

As of 2015, common Spumoni recipes typically involve various ice cream flavors, such as cherry, pistachio, chocolate and vanilla. The ice cream flavors were chosen to incorporate the fruit and nut flavors of the original Spumoni recipe and also due to the colors being similar to the Italian flag. Modern Spumoni recipes also feature different presentation methods, such as being laid out next to each other rather than layered, and additional items, such as whipped cream or slices of fruit.
