Of what is St Charbel the saint?

St. Charbel Makhluf is not a patron saint. However, during his beatification in 1965, Pope Paul VI noted his devotion to the values of poverty, penance and asceticism.

During his canonization by Pope Paul VI in 1977, St. Charbel was called "the second St. Anthony of the Desert," the "Perfume of Lebanon," and a model of spiritual values and renewal. St. Charbel's three miracles qualifying him for beatification and canonization were all acts of healing. In life, he was known for his severe asceticism and for living as a solitary hermit for his final 23 years. He died on Christmas Eve 1898.
