India's Project Tiger began in 1973 while Indira Gandhi was prime minister. The project first began at the Palamau Tiger Reserve, but more reserves were soon established, and the project has since expanded to numerous tiger reserves around the country.
Project Tiger followed in the wake of the country's first tiger census in 1972, which revealed that the total tiger population had dwindled from 20,000 to 40,000 at the beginning of the 20th century to only about 1,800. It established protective reserves with security measures and patrols to discourage poaching, the primary suspected source of the tiger population decline. The project is still active as of 2014.
