What is the state bird of Kentucky?

Kentucky's state bird is the red bird, or Northern or Kentucky cardinal, with the scientific name cardinalis cardinalis, since the Kentucky Senate approved a resolution on this in February 1926. The Northern cardinal is also the state bird of Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

Northern cardinals are natives of the southeastern part of the United States and live in open woodland, such as hedgerows and backyards. The redbirds don't migrate and sing almost the entire year. They breed two to three times a year and eat primarily seeds, fruit and insects. The males are brilliant red all over while the females are brown with red accents.
