As of November 2015, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Colorado allow the recreational use of marijuana, CNN notes. States that have laws that allow marijuana use for medical reasons include New York, Michigan, Illinois, Montana and New Mexico. Nevada, California, Hawaii and Arizona also allow marijuana for medical reasons.
Washington, DC also allows marijuana for recreational use, CNN says. Maine, New Hampshire, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island have laws on the books for medical use as do New Jersey and Delaware. The laws for medical use vary from state to state, with some laws being broader than others and dealing with a variety of medical conditions, GOVERNING notes.
