What are the steps in leveling uneven basement floors?

There are often high and low spots in basement floors, which cause difficulty when you attempt to add new flooring. Use self-leveling cement to create a floor that is ready for any type of covering, according to SFGate.

1. Remove all the obstructions

   Remove everything from the basement in order to use the self-leveling compound. Once the room is clear, remove any base trim.

2. Clean the floor

   Use a neutral pH cleanser to mop the floor. Once it is clean, use a mop and clear water to rinse. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

3. Level high spots

   Pull a straight two-by-four across the floor. Mark any place where the board begins to lift on one end when held flat against the floor on the other side as a high spot. Use a concrete grinder to remove excess material so it is level with the floor. Sweep away any dust from grinding.

4. Apply bonding adhesive

   Use the adhesive recommended by the leveling compound manufacturer. Apply using a paint roller. Allow to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

5. Pour leveling compound

   Mix the compound using an electric drill and paddle bit. It should be the consistency of brownie mix. Spread to a ¼-inch thickness with a squeegee. The slow-setting product levels as it dries. The normal drying time is 48 hours. Once dry, the floor is smooth, level and ready for the new flooring.
