How do I stop basement seepage?

Preventing basement seepage requires looking for the leak and sealing the cracks. For this project, you need a wire brush, caulk, a chisel, a hammer and hydraulic cement. Applying dry-lock sealant paint is an optional step, but it prevents water from seeping through the cracks, and it is a deterrent against moisture and dampness. You can also use epoxy or polyurethane as substitutes when filling in the crack.

1. Locate the leak

   Search for leaky pipes or water seepage in the brick work. Look for cracks in the wall, and check for shifted slates outside of your property. Check the gutters to make sure that water is being directed away from the foundation. If you cannot find the leak, use a damp meter to locate the problem area.

2. Prepare the crack

   Use a chisel and hammer to widen the crack to allow the cement to expand. Clean the crack with a metallic scraper to remove the residue, and clean out the crack interior with a wire brush.

3. Fill the crack

   Once the crack has been cleaned, use epoxy or polyurethane injections as alternatives. If you are not using polyurethane or epoxy, pack the cement into the crack, and use the scraper to ensure that the cement blends with the wall surface. Allow the cement to dry. Fill the crack with caulk.

4. Apply sealant

   Wet the wall, and apply sealant to the treated area.
