What do you take to stop a menstrual period?

The most common solution to stop a menstrual period is taking extended-cycle birth control pills. According to WebMD, the extended-cycle birth control pills allow women to have a period only every three months.
WebMD states that the FDA approved the extended-cycle birth control pills in 2003, and as of 2014, is examining the merits of a pill that allows women to go a full year without a menstrual period. According to Health Magazine, this is a fairly new product, and there is not enough research to show if there are any long-term effects. WebMD also agrees that there is no consensus on how long this type of birth control pill should be used or if it should be used at all.
