What are stud starter earrings?

Starter stud earrings are the earrings used for piercing; they have straight posts made of surgical stainless steel, are usually plated in 24k gold and feature a single, small ball or jewel. A tension clasp keeps the jewel secured against the ear and the earring from falling out.

Starter stud earrings fit into an ear-piercing gun. The gun fits around the ear and shoots the starter stud through the lobe. Since newly pierced ears are open wounds, the studs must be made of hypoallergenic materials. Gold, silver and surgical steel are considered safe. Nickel often causes allergic reactions, so it is not the best choice.
