What is a superfund site?

A Superfund site is any land in the United States determined by the EPA to contain hazardous waste and selected for possible rehabilitation because it poses a risk to human health and the environment. Such a site is listed on the National Priorities List.

The EPA’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response manages the Superfund program. It partners with states, local communities and other stakeholders in the site clean-up process, which includes construction of hazardous waste sites, removal action and enforcement against potential polluters.

Before joining the National Priorities List, a site goes through a Hazard Ranking System, and public opinion about it is considered.
