WebMD states that GLA, or gamma-linolenic acid, is an omega-6 fatty acid supplement. It can be used for a variety of medical conditions and ailments.

Gamma-linolenic acid is found in plant seed oils and used to help those with rheumatoid arthritis, skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, high cholesterol, depression, diabetic nerve pain, hay fever, chronic fatigue syndrome and heart disease. Some even use it to try to prevent cancer. WebMD states that GLA works by the body converting the omega-6 fatty acids to substances that reduce inflammation in the body and cell growth. Both evening primrose oil and borage oil contain gamma-linolenic acid.
