It is used to describe cars that generally have room for at least four passengers, four-wheel drive, light towing capacity and a good deal of storage space. According to Edmunds, SUVs are usually put into three categories: full-size, midsized and compact. SUVs that are smaller and resemble a car rather than truck are often referred to as a crossover vehicle. Compact SUVs tend to be both less expensive and have better gas mileage than their larger counterparts.
