According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a person with head lice may experience a red or irritated scalp due to scratching, or feel a crawling sensation on the scalp and neck. Head lice can be diagnosed by locating lice or nits in the hair. The adult lice are light brown, seed-sized animals, while the nits are yellow or tan in color and about the size of a pin head.
