Typical symptoms of head lice include an itchy scalp, swollen lymph nodes and pink eye, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Those with head lice may see crawling bugs on their skin, hair or clothing and find lice eggs, called nits, in their hair.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a person with head lice may experience a red or irritated scalp due to scratching, or feel a crawling sensation on the scalp and neck. Head lice can be diagnosed by locating lice or nits in the hair. The adult lice are light brown, seed-sized animals, while the nits are yellow or tan in color and about the size of a pin head.
