Hyperthyroidism causes a wide range of symptoms, including unintentional weight loss, tremor of the hands, increased sweating, rapid heartbeat, menstrual irregularities and nervousness, according to Mayo Clinic. Patients may also notice a swelling at the base of the throat due to the presence of a goiter.

Eye symptoms can provide another clue to the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Some patients develop protruding eyeballs due to the swelling of tissues surrounding the eye socket, reports Mayo Clinic. Other eye symptoms include inflammation, blurred vision, increased dryness or tear production, light sensitivity and reduced eye movements. Eye complications are more common in individuals who smoke.
