Uranus’ average surface temperature is -371.2 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the coldest planet in the solar system. One reason for this planet being so cold is that it has a low internal core temperature.
Uranus is an ice giant that does not consist of a solid surface. Its atmosphere has a composition that is mostly clouds made up of gases, such as hydrogen, helium and methane. Scientists believe that underneath this cloud layer there may be a liquid water layer and ice.
Uranus’ name comes from the Greek god Ouranos. William Herschel discovered this planet in 1781. Uranus has 13 rings and many moons, including Oberon and Miranda. Its period of revolution around the sun is 84 Earth years.
