In 1969, the U.S. Bureau of Printing and Engraving discontinued printing the $1,000 note, along with $500, $5,000 and $10,000 notes, due to limited use by the general public. In the United States, modern $1,000 notes feature a portrait of President Grover Cleveland.
The $1,000 note originally featured a portrait of the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton's portrait was replaced by President Cleveland's to avoid confusion, as Hamilton's portrait also appears on the $10 note. Last printed in 1945, the $1,000 note is still in circulation and considered an acceptable form of payment.
The $1,000 denomination was not the largest note printed in the United States. The largest note printed in the United States was the $100,000 note, which features a portrait of President Woodrow Wilson.
