What are the tiny orange bugs that bite?

The Trombiculidae family of mites, also known as chiggers, are tiny orange bugs that bite humans and animals. They perch in tall grass or other vegetation and jump onto their host, then bite and inject an enzyme that digests the victim's skin cells. This often causes intense discomfort.
Chigger bites often turn into large red wheals or hives that can itch for weeks. To minimize pain and discomfort from chigger bites, victims can apply an antihistamine cream topically on a daily basis until the bite heals. If chigger bites continue to be painful after a few weeks, a doctor can check for infection.
