Inspect car battery terminals frequently for buildup of corrosion, dirt and other foreign material. Over time, sulfuric acid fumes can cause deposits of lead and copper sulfate to form on the battery terminals, impeding current flow and reducing battery efficiency.
For routine cleaning of battery terminals, first remove the battery cable from the negative terminal, then remove the cable from the positive terminal. Next, using a mixture of baking soda and water, thoroughly scrub the battery terminals until all foreign matter has been removed. Use a carbonated soda such as Coca-Cola to remove corrosive deposits. Apply a thin coating of petroleum jelly to the clean metal surface of the battery terminals to slow down future corrosion. Reconnect the battery cables, and ensure the car starts properly.
