Pack a day bag filled with items you'll need during the first day of the cruise, as staff typically checks luggage and doesn't deliver it to state rooms until later in the day. Choose clothing in neutral colors that you can easily mix and match.

Most cruises have dressy dinners, but it's not necessary to fill bags with multiple evening outfits. A woman can pack a simple black dress and a few wraps or sweaters, or pack one neutral skirt and a few tops. A man can pack dark pants, a wrinkle-resistant shirt and a few ties.

Cruise decks can be slippery, so pack walking shoes or sandals with slip-proof soles.

Contact the cruise line to find out what toiletries are included in the cabin. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash may or may not be provided.
