The main staple of the Tlingit diet is salmon. The indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest roast fresh salmon over a fire or smoke the salmon to store for later.
The Tlingit people also regularly eat herring and herring eggs, referred to as Tlingit caviar. The people of the Tlingit culture are skilled at fishing and are known to use a variety of fish traps. They practice sustainable fishing, never overfishing an area, and engaging in practices which ensure future harvests. Aside from fishing, the Tlingit people regularly hunt regional deer, rabbit, mountain goat, local bear species, beaver and moose.
