The main body of the trumpet is made of brass, although some of the tubing can also have copper or other metals in the coating. The trumpet dates back to the Middle Ages when it was called the "alphorn" and made of wood.
The alphorn trumpet was a long, hollow, cylindrical, wooden tube that performers used to announce the presence of nobility. In the 18th century, the trumpet was updated to include crooks and tuning slides, or coiled brass tubes that increased the length of the main tube to change the trumpet's key. The valve was created in 1788, which developed into the five-key style in 1801 and allowed the musician to play the chromatic scale.
