What type of government does Afghanistan have?

Afghanistan is ruled by an Islamic republic. As of 2014, Afghanistan's leader was Chief Executive Hamid Karzai. The last election took place in 2010.

Afghanistan adopted an Islamic republic government after the Taliban lost power in 2001. The country is now governed primarily by Islamic laws. Several countries are ruled this way, including, Iran, Pakistan and Mauritania.

The defeat of the Taliban in 2001 wasn't the last the country has heard from the extremist group. The Taliban continues to threaten the republic government the country has tried hard to build. So far, despite government corruption and continued threats from the Taliban, the Islamic republic government holds strong, trying to make Afghanistan a better place.
