Chile is a republic with democratic representation. The President of Chile is the head of state and head of government. The President appoints a cabinet of ministers who exercise executive authority in government affairs. The President serves for four years and cannot immediately run for re-election.
Chile has a national congress with legislative power. The country also has a system of courts that operate independently of the government and national congress. The legal system was heavily influenced by several western European countries. The current constitution was approved by plebiscite in September of 1980. Chile achieved independence from Spain on September 18, 1810.
