Mexico's government is a federal republic. The United States is also considered a federal republic by some, though others call it a constitutional republic or a constitution-based federal republic.

A federal republic is a government that has a centralized federal government, but that restricts the power of that government in favor of allowing local governments some power to rule. In other words, the states or provinces of the country are allowed to rule themselves, though usually the final power is with the federal government. The U.S. is called a constitutional republic due to the fact that the federal government's powers are regulated through the constitution.
