According to the CIA World Factbook, Nicaragua has a republican government. In such a system, the people and the representatives they elect all have political power. Nicaragua has three branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial.
The Nicaraguan president leads the executive branch. He or she serves as both the head of state and the head of government. A person can hold this office, which is popularly elected, for two five-year terms. The unicameral 92-seat National Assembly is Nicaragua's legislative branch. The Supreme Court is the highest court in Nicaragua and its 16 members are elected by the National Assembly.
