Statins are typically prescribed to patients with high cholesterol, according to WebMD. Along with lifestyle changes, statins help to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Common side effects range from mild to severe and include abdominal cramping or pain, bloating, constipation, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, muscle ache, nausea and rash, notes WebMD. Some patients may experience memory loss, mental confusion, high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes as a result of use. Rare and very serious side effects include myositis, elevated muscle enzymes and rhabdomyolysis, which may lead to kidney failure or death, but only affects one of every 10,000 statin users.
