What is the typical minimum age for living in a senior apartment?

The minimum age for senior apartment living is typically 55 or 62-years-old. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing for Older Persons Act mandates that housing must include at least one person who is 55 or older in at least 80 percent of the occupied units. These types of communities are usually identified as “age-qualified†in their marketing brochures.
One spouse can be under the required age as long as the other meets the age requirement. HUD does make exceptions for those under the minimum age if the person is handicapped. Also, those under the age of 19 are not permitted as permanent residents.
