Generally, anyone who meets certain income thresholds is required to file a tax return, regardless of age, according to TurboTax. In 2014, any dependent who earns more than $6,200 in income from an employer is required to file a tax return.
Dependents who make less than $6,200 can still file a return to get a refund, but they are not required to do so, according to TurboTax.
Any dependent who receives more then $1,000 in unearned income, such as from interest and dividends, must also file a tax return. However, if the dependent's only income is from interest and dividends, his parents can choose to include the income on their tax return, according to TurboTax.
