George Washington is the face on the United States quarter. His likeness replaced the Standing Liberty quarter and was commissioned to commemorate his 200th birthday.
John Flanagan, a New York sculptor, initially submitted the George Washington design as part of a contest. He used a sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdan as inspiration. It took Congressional approval to change the look of the quarter coin to the design most people know today. Due to the Great Depression, no George Washington quarter coins were produced in 1933. The George Washington design ran until 1998, when a series of commemorative quarters celebrating the fifty states were released.
