Where does ultraviolet light come from?

Ultraviolet light comes from the Sun. Earth's ozone layer absorbs most of the ultraviolet light before it reaches the surface, protecting humans and all other life forms from the harmful effects of these rays.

Humans cannot see UV light because it has shorter wavelengths than other light. It is divided into three classifications: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. UV-B rays cause sunburns and increased risks of DNA and cellular damage in living organisms. Thankfully, 95 percent of UV-B rays are absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere.

Ozone depletion over the last sixty years has become a cause for concern, as the thinner the protective layer becomes, the more at risk plants and animals are to the harmful effects of UV rays.
